Holiday Greeting - A Day On, Not a Day Off

January 17, 2019

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation establishing the third Monday of January as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.1 Dr. King, who is remembered for his powerful oratory and transformative ideas, once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”2

To honor Dr. King, many people choose to make this day a day of service. Service work helps others and helping others makes us happier. wrote, “Experiments show evidence that altruism is hardwired in the brain – and it's pleasurable. Helping others may just be the secret to living a life that is not only happier but also healthier...”3

Some ideas on how to put service into practice are:4

• Give your time. The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver and more satisfying for the giver than the gift of money.
• Find ways to share your interests and skills with the needs of others. Many people have a valuable skill they can share with others free of charge.
• Give food. Food banks are always looking for either volunteers and/or canned goods.
• Help outdoors. You can surprise a busy neighbor by mowing their lawn, trimming hedges, or shoveling their walkway after a snowfall.

We wish you a very happy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!
